Professor Ohala is a world-renowned phonetician and Professor Emeritus of Linguistics at the University of California Berkeley, where he continues to participate in the research program, particularly the Phonology Lab, which he directed from 1975 to 2004. He has published more than 100 papers on topics in phonetics and phonology, including sound change and the relation between phonetics and phonology, psycholinguistic aspects of phonology, phonetic and phonological universals, ethological aspects of communication, and sound symbolism. He has served as President of the International Phonetic Association and of the Permanent Council for International Conferences on Spoken Language Processing.
