I will review three perspectives on academic language that currently inform research and classroom practice: Cummins’ comparison of interpersonal and academic language proficiency, Gee’s notion of primary and secondary discourses, and systemic functional linguistics’ (SFL) constructs that inform notions of academic language, what I have called The Language of Schooling. I will show how these perspectives provide different lenses through which to view students’ language use and to conduct research on language in classrooms. I will then offer examples of classroom work informed by SFL approaches from my recent work with teachers of English language learners.
