Daniel Moglen has an article published in CATESOL Journal
Daniel Moglen, 5th year PhD candidate in Linguistics, has an article in the November 2014 issue of CATESOL Journal, titled "Tuning in: Using the News for a Content-based ESL Class". This article is a pedagogical piece based on his experiences designing and implementing an ESL elective course at the UC Davis Extension Center. The use of authentic materials kept students engaged and exposed them to a variety vocabulary and grammatical structures that they may not otherwise encounter. The article discusses how to effectively use news articles and news media sources in a mix-skills ESL class, and also provides supplemental activities that can be used in a variety of ESL classes.
