Vineeta Chand: Postdoctoral Fellowship Recipient

Vineeta Chand, who completed a Ph.D. dissertation in Linguistics in 2009 and is currently a lecturer in the Department of Anthropology, was recently awarded a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at the UC Davis Medical Center's Alzheimer's Disease Center (ADC). The award is funded by the National Institute of Health & the National Institute of Aging and is focused on increasing diversity, in terms of both researchers and research subjects, and providing specialized training for the fellow. She will be conducting her own research on idea density in a diverse population, moving beyond "standard English" speakers to examine AAVE speakers, Spanish speakers, and bilinguals/bidialectals. She will also be taking classes at the Medical Center on clinical epidemiology and aging and working directly with Alzheimer's patients at the ADC. This grant supplements Bruce Reed's research on cognitive reserve in an educationally, regionally, ethnically and linguistically diverse cohort by examining if idea density is neutral vis-à-vis education and linguistic background and whether it is useful as a diagnostic tool in clinical Alzheimer's contexts.
