Ph.D. Admissions Requirements

Applications, with supporting materials, must be submitted online through Graduate Studies by January 15.

We require: all transcripts, three letters of recommendation (preferably from instructors), general GRE scores, a writing sample (such as a term paper or an academic essay), a statement of purpose, and a personal history statement. International applicants must submit scores from an approved test of English as a foreign language, unless  their primary language of instruction has been English, they have earned a degree from or attended for at least two years an accredited university whose primary language of instruction is English, or they have attended UC Davis for at least one year. One of the following minimum scores is required:

  • 100 on the TOEFL iBT
  • 7 on the IELTS (overall band score)
  • 250 on the TOEFL computer-based test
  • 600 on the TOEFL paper test

Note: To have ETS report your GRE scores to the Linguistics program, use the code 2903. For the TOEFL use code 04.

To be eligible for all funding opportunities, applicants must report general GRE scores and file a FAFSA and a fellowship application available from the Graduate Studies website.
