Our Domains of Expertise

Our Ph.D. degree program has two domains of expertise: language structure and language science, and second language development and multilingualism.

The doctoral program in the UC Davis Department of Linguistics distinguishes itself from programs at other UC campuses by offering two areas of emphasis that are at the forefront of a changing discipline. A concentration in Multilingualism and Language Development responds to a growing need for researchers trained to investigate language contact, language variation, and the acquisition and teaching of non-native languages. A concentration in Language Science teaches students the latest quantitative, computational, and experimental methods employed in Natural Language Processing and psycholinguistic research. The program also has strength in language structure and theory, and linguistic typology.
