LIN 205C: Taboo and Profanity (Fall 2026)

In Fall quarter, Dr. Laurel Lawyer will be teaching a course on research design and data acquisition methods in linguistics. This course centers around a theme which allows students to explore specific methods in a novel linguistic domain. This year, the theme will be swearing and taboo language use.

Specific research designs will likely cover quantitative methods (e.g., experimental studies and corpus work), elicitation and documentation, and qualitative methods (e.g., interviews, ethnography). While exploring these methods, students will also become familiar with current research in the area of swearing and taboo language use, and will produce a proposal for a fully worked-up research design.
